A great day at Waitrose, Otley was had by all. Jacksons Bread, Yorkshire Tea and our lovely rapeseed oil, had a fine time chatting to customers and staff alike.

Just finishing my tea and this happens! He really is a star!
Unbelievably we have finished harvest! The combine did not break down, the tractors all worked. No grain was spilt and the weather stayed fine. How often can you say that at this time of year? Yields may not have been the best due to the bad weather last Autumn, but at least the quality has been good overall. Now we will be able to see what the market thinks to our grain, and hopefully they will come up with some good prices for us. Farming seems to be the only business around where the goods are sold at a price dictated by the merchant rather than the grower! Well it is for a Rapeseed Oil manufacturer anyway…
You may think that this means we have an easy time now until next year, but you would be wrong- We are busy preparing the land and drilling crops ready for next years harvest. Yes that is 2014 we are talking about. We are just going to start watching the programme on BBC 2 about harvest 2013 with Greg Wallace – should be interesting to see what they think!
As we suspected some of the winter crops have been disappointing this year. Yields are down due to the terrible autumn when they were planted, which is such a shame after all the hard work that went into the planting and nurturing. The spring crops are now ready and looking better so we hope that we shall have better news to report later on. All we need is for the weather to stay good. There was a massive yorkshire storm this weekend which has stopped the harvest for the time being, but at least it gives us time to catch our breath and do some office work. Hopefully we will start the combine again in a few days as it will take that long to dry. Then we shall have to start drilling again ready for next year.
Absolutely no peace for the wicked!!
The combine is out and we are ready to move! Final checks have been done to make sure nothing needs attention before we start – there is no rain on the horizon and the moisture content of the seed is just right. (We need the seed to be dry so that we do not have to incur extra drying costs). Last week we swathed the rape so that all the seeds were ready to harvest at the same time and today we are off to combine it all. At long last we will be able to see whether we will have a good harvest after the horrendous planting season. We know that the yield will not be as good as normal, but we hope it will not be too low and hopefully we will not be harvesting until too late into the night – but it is such a relief to be actually starting the season. Winter Barley looks as though that will be next, and we already know that the seed is a bit ‘thin’ this year, which means it may not be able to go for malting so we will not be able to collect a price premium. The knock on effect of the bad weather last year is only now coming to a conclusion.
Flaming June what happened to you? To be fair it has not been a bad month, the land looks as though it is gradually recovering, and although as we look around the county there are vast swathes of uncultivated land (those are the bits full of weeds and bare earth) things are not looking too bad. We have, however, noted the lovely poppy fields which are all over the place. This has been caused by the inability to get to the weeds in the autumn, when the land was so wet, and we are now reaping the cost!
The yellow fields are gradually losing their colour as the pods start to gain weight ready for us to harvest the seed within. Will it be a good harvest? Now is the time to start wishing for really good weather for the next month or so! Hay time is upon us again, and despite my best efforts, yes we are going to gather in a crop this year – the first of the stressful times for the farm.
The show season for the rapeseed oil has also arrived and once again we are out and about. This year for the first time we are exhibiting at the Yorkshire Show. Usually we are busy on the farm, but this year we thought we might have time to add it to our calendar. Make sure you pop by to see us.
On a personal note the lounge is now back in working order – not without trauma, and peace is reigning – for the time being at least. I have even bought a swinging hammock for the summer – now that is an omen for bad weather if ever there was one. I wonder if it will be used at all?
The first signs of Spring are here! We can see signs of growth in the field! The tractors are all racing up and down the fields with drills attached, rollers are ponderously throwing up clouds of dust – yes dust- as they press the seeds into the ground. (There is nothing like seeing the next door neighbour in his field to make sure you get into yours). There is great activity on all sides. Even the lake –sorry wheat field, where the swans have taken up residency is still there, but decreasing in size daily. The wheat will never recover, but at least we can see bare earth in places! All we need now is heat and sunshine and Spring will have definitely sprung.
Talking of springing, we had a bit of a disaster over Easter when the lounge ceiling fell in, fortunately just before the visitors arrived, but it was an interesting situation none the less. We are now waiting for Insurance Assessors, builders and plasterers, then decorators. I wonder if now is the time to talk about the new gas fire? Perhaps I should leave it a couple of days until the drilling is finished!
